TAURO is a Toronto-based collaboration between Cynthia Tauro — jazz pianist and singer-songwriter — and Brendan Canning, co-founder of Broken Social Scene.

The project began in 2022, during pandemic-era uncertainty, after the two connected through Toronto’s Field Trip Music Festival and started jamming informally. What came out of that was a shared sound that pulls from indie, soul, jazz, R&B, and trip-hop without feeling stitched together.

Cynthia brings over a decade of experience in Toronto’s jazz scene, with piano and vocal work grounded in both songwriting and improvisation. Before TAURO, her album Moments helped establish those roots and connected her with established players in the city’s jazz orbit.

Before their debut full-length, TAURO introduced the project through singles including “Great Minds” and “Change Is Strange” — records that sketched the emotional and sonic direction now fully realized on Act I.

On Act I, the duo leans into themes of change, emotional recalibration, and personal reorientation. The album also features local Toronto collaborators, keeping the project tightly connected to the scene it came from.

TAURO is also taking the project live, including a scheduled show at Drake Underground (Toronto) on May 1, 2026, a fitting local touchpoint for a project shaped by the city’s creative ecosystem.

TAURO is in rotation on Northern Dial. Tune in at northerndial.ca.
