Artists in Place, Time and Context
Northern Dial's long-term digital roadmap is a searchable, explorable Canadian music resource connecting artists with geography, eras, scenes, releases, stories and source provenance. The current artist library is the foundation for that work, but it is not being represented as a preservation archive yet.
Canadian Music Is More Than a List of Names
Streaming services are good at making music available. They are less useful at explaining how artists connect to a city, a scene, a decade, a community or one another. Northern Dial is interested in building that missing layer of public context.
The Archive and Atlas concept would extend the current catalogue from artist-by-artist documentation into a navigable cultural resource.
From Catalogue to Cultural Map
Artists
Source-backed biographies, official links, locations, active periods, musical relationships and Northern Dial coverage.
Places and Scenes
Connections between artists and cities, provinces, local movements, venues, communities and regional histories.
Eras and Releases
Ways to explore Canadian music by decade, active years, releases and changing musical contexts.
Stories and Oral Histories
Future interviews, essays, firsthand accounts and contextual storytelling that document more than metadata alone.
Source Provenance
Clear links back to reliable sources so users can distinguish documented information from inference or unresolved research.
Discovery Paths
Interactive routes through genre, place, era and related artists that turn documentation into active public discovery.
Built for Public Use
Source-Backed
Ambiguous information stays unresolved until evidence supports it. Provenance should remain visible.
Accessible
Mobile usability, keyboard navigation, meaningful image descriptions, readable contrast and low-bandwidth access should be considered from the start.
Sustainable
The project should be maintainable over time, with structured metadata and workflows that do not depend on one-off manual pages.
Build on What Already Exists
Curated Artist Library
Continue verifying artists, enriching profiles and structuring genre, era and location metadata.
Scenes and Geography
Add stronger regional taxonomy, artist relationships and indexable paths through place and time.
Stories and Preservation
Develop interviews, oral histories, archival partnerships and long-term stewardship practices as capacity grows.
