Canadian Music Deserves Context
Northern Dial is an independent Canadian music discovery, documentation and radio project. We use curated programming, source-backed artist information, editorial storytelling and digital discovery tools to help listeners find Canadian music beyond the handful of names that dominate mainstream recommendation systems.
Discovery. Documentation. Dissemination.
Northern Dial exists to make Canadian music easier to find, understand and share, with particular attention to independent, emerging, regional and under-documented artists. Radio is the front door, but the larger project is about building useful public infrastructure around Canadian music.
Discovery
Connect listeners with Canadian artists through 24/7 programming, requests and Northern Dial Discovery.
Documentation
Build source-backed artist profiles that add biography, location, official links and context to the music in the catalogue.
Dissemination
Give Canadian music more ways to travel through radio, editorial features, searchable artist pages and future live programming.
More Than a Stream
24/7 Canadian Radio
Curated programming that moves across genres, eras and scenes while keeping Canadian artists at the centre.
Canadian Artist Library
A growing catalogue of artists heard on Northern Dial, enriched with source-backed bios, locations and official links.
Northern Dial Discovery
A public discovery tool that turns the curated catalogue into five-artist recommendations based on genre, era or an artist a listener already likes.
Editorial and Community
Artist features, regional stories, submissions, requests and future hosted programming that give the catalogue human context.
Northern Dial at a Glance
Northern Dial is already a living Canadian music platform, with a growing artist library, 24/7 radio and new editorial work added regularly.
Built for More Than One Audience
Listeners
People who want to find Canadian music outside the usual algorithmic loop and understand the artists behind what they hear.
Artists
Canadian musicians who benefit from additional pathways to discovery, contextual coverage, requests and audience connection.
Music Communities
Local scenes, curators, independent music organizations and cultural communities looking for more ways to surface Canadian work.
Researchers and Journalists
People looking for structured, source-backed starting points on Canadian artists, geography, scenes and musical relationships.
Human Curation, Source-Backed Profiles
Northern Dial does not treat every database credit as fact. Artist identities are reviewed against reliable sources, non-Canadian artists and non-artist credits are removed when the evidence is clear, ambiguous cases stay unresolved rather than becoming guesses and profiles are enriched with citations, official links and location information where available.
This editorial layer matters because the artist library also powers Northern Dial Discovery. The goal is not simply to collect names, but to make the catalogue trustworthy enough to support meaningful public discovery.
Rights, Sources and Audience Evidence
Northern Dial maintains a public approach to source provenance, corrections and rights, and is beginning structured audience research to measure whether the project is actually helping people discover Canadian artists.
How Northern Dial Shows Up
Northern Dial's public brand guide documents the project's messaging, editorial voice and visual system, including the principles used across artist profiles, editorial features, social media and product design.
The People Behind Northern Dial
We're building Northern Dial around a shared purpose: helping people discover Canadian music and connect with the artists and communities behind it.
Our work brings together music journalism, curation, research, design and technology. We care about telling thoughtful stories, making overlooked music easier to find and giving listeners discoveries they can carry with them.
As Northern Dial grows, we welcome Canadian artists, writers, developers and arts professionals who want to help shape its next chapter.
Founded by Canadian music journalist Riley Wallace.
Built in Canada, for Canadian Music
Northern Dial is built and maintained in Canada as an independent music discovery and documentation project, with editorial judgment and listener usefulness guiding how the platform grows.
The project is designed to expand through new discovery tools, regional coverage, artist context and collaborative programming while keeping Canadian music at the centre.
Access Is Part of the Product
Northern Dial is working toward an experience that is usable across devices, connection speeds and abilities. Accessibility considerations include semantic page structure, keyboard-friendly controls, readable contrast, meaningful image descriptions, mobile layouts and reduced-motion support. Future audio and interview formats will prioritize captions or transcripts where applicable.
From Discovery Platform to Cultural Resource
Northern Dial Sessions
A program in development for live and virtual Canadian performances, artist conversations and documented sessions that can extend discovery beyond the stream.
Canadian Music Archive and Atlas
A longer-term digital project exploring artists through place, era, scene, releases, oral histories and source provenance. The current artist library is its foundation, not yet a preservation archive.
