Artist Feature: Neddy Wrote “One Last Time” When Talking Was Too Much

After his mother’s cancer diagnosis, the Mississauga songwriter went to his basement studio. “One Last Time” came out of that evening.

Mississauga pop-folk songwriter Neddy was driving to his parents’ house when he began worrying about what they needed to tell him. They had asked him and his sister to come home. His mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

He recalled the early-stage diagnosis in a 2025 Modern Mississauga interview. Back home, he did not want to talk. He went to his basement studio instead.

He had not planned to write something so personal. “I poured out everything I was feeling,” he told Modern Mississauga. The result was “One Last Time”, which he described as a promise to stay with someone through the end. He chose to release it for others facing a similar situation.

Neddy began in rap, making music he thought his peers would like, before moving toward pop and folk. He has said he wanted other Black artists to see possibilities in those genres, too. “One Last Time” gives that shift a specific story.

In May 2026, another song written during a difficult stretch, “Be Somebody Special,” won Mississauga’s Song of the Year. Its inspiration came from the biblical passage about Jesus and the fig tree. Neddy said he wanted it to encourage self-belief and hard work; the prize includes recording a track at Metalworks Studios.

His current release, “I tried to let go”, is in Northern Dial’s rotation.
