Northern Dial Artist Profile

Wave Montega

Malton, Ontario, Canada

Toronto rapper Wave Montega emerged from Malton with a style shaped by the multicultural environment of the city’s west end and by the Jamaican music he heard growing up. A published poet from childhood, he began releasing music in 2018 after time in the United States on a basketball scholarship. His early breakout "Side Bag" helped establish a local audience and led into the 2020 project Still Wavy.

Montega’s 2022 album Catharsis widened the sound beyond straightforward rap, moving among drill, grime, R&B and dancehall while keeping his writing focused on depression, relationships, betrayal and loss. That flexibility reflects both Toronto’s genre-crossing rap culture and Montega’s own Caribbean background. Later releases continued the pattern, including METHADONE and 2026 material that kept his catalogue moving between hard-edged street rap and more introspective songs.

His importance in Northern Dial’s contemporary catalogue comes from that refusal to flatten Toronto rap into one sound. Montega’s work connects Malton, Jamaican-Canadian musical memory, UK drill influence and modern independent rap in a way that feels specific to the city rather than generically international.
