The Weeknd

Scarborough, Ontario, Canada

Scarborough-born singer, songwriter and producer Abel Tesfaye transformed contemporary R&B under the name The Weeknd by turning anonymity, atmosphere and a tightly controlled visual world into part of the music itself. In 2011 he uploaded songs to YouTube without initially identifying himself, then collected that early material on the mixtape House of Balloons. Its narcotic production, stark emotional perspective and blurred boundary between R&B, electronic music and indie textures helped define the emerging alternative-R&B vocabulary. That same year Tesfaye founded XO and contributed writing, production and vocals to Drake's Take Care, connecting his mysterious online breakthrough to a rapidly expanding Toronto music ecosystem.

After the mixtape trilogy and 2013 debut album Kiss Land, Tesfaye scaled that darker language into global pop. Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy both topped the Billboard 200, with songs including “Can't Feel My Face,” “The Hills” and “I Feel It Coming” proving that his ominous production and high, precise vocal style could function at mainstream scale. After Hours pushed the synthesis even further: “Blinding Lights” became one of the era's defining pop recordings, while the album's red-suited character, videos and performances reinforced his preference for treating a release cycle as a continuous cinematic world. His achievements include four GRAMMY wins, seven Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles by 2025 and a 2021 Super Bowl halftime performance.

Tesfaye continued that world-building through Dawn FM and 2025's Hurry Up Tomorrow, which expanded into a feature film and was presented as a possible closing chapter for The Weeknd persona. He also returned to the GRAMMY stage in 2025 after a multi-year boycott over the Recording Academy's nomination process. His importance to Canadian music is larger than the scale of those milestones: he helped turn the nocturnal, emotionally guarded sound associated with early-2010s Toronto R&B into an international language, then proved it could evolve into stadium pop without losing its underlying tension. Few Canadian artists have moved so decisively from a local and internet-born aesthetic to a globally influential pop vocabulary.
