the sheepdogs

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Formed in Saskatoon in 2004, The Sheepdogs built their audience the slow way, touring and self-releasing records around a sound rooted in 1970s blues-rock, Southern rock and harmony-heavy classic rock. Their national breakthrough arrived in 2011 through Rolling Stone's Choose the Cover competition, which made them the first unsigned band to appear on the magazine's cover. The exposure turned years of independent work into a major-label opportunity and gave a Saskatchewan band playing deliberately unfashionable guitar music an international platform.

The momentum carried into Learn & Burn and the self-titled The Sheepdogs, produced by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys. At the 2012 JUNO Awards, the group won Rock Album of the Year, New Group of the Year and Single of the Year for "I Don't Know," cementing the breakthrough as more than a magazine-contest novelty. Albums including Future Nostalgia and Changing Colours followed as the band refined its mix of twin guitars, organ, vocal harmonies and compact songwriting.

Rather than pivot away from classic-rock language as trends changed, The Sheepdogs turned stylistic consistency into a long-term identity. Their catalogue, extensive touring and multiple JUNO wins have made them one of the most visible rock bands to emerge from Saskatchewan in the 21st century. That regional story matters: their success demonstrated that a band far from Canada's largest music-industry centres could build a national audience through touring, independent persistence and an immediately recognizable sound.
