The Beaches
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto quartet The Beaches grew out of a much longer musical partnership than their 2020s breakthrough suggests. Sisters Jordan and Kylie Miller began playing together as children and formed the earlier band Done With Dolls with drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel before guitarist and keyboardist Leandra Earl completed the lineup that became The Beaches. Named for the east-Toronto neighbourhood where several members grew up, the group developed through years of touring and major-label rock releases, including the 2017 debut Late Show. Their early momentum brought a 2018 JUNO for Breakthrough Group of the Year and established them as a regular presence on Canadian alternative radio.
The band's career changed dramatically after a management and creative reset that put more control over its identity back in the members' hands. Released independently, 2023's Blame My Ex sharpened their guitar sound with new-wave and pop instincts and produced the viral single "Blame Brett." The song became their first U.S. Billboard-charting track, spent an extended run at No. 1 on Canadian alternative radio and helped move the band from smaller club audiences into much larger North American rooms. At the 2024 JUNO Awards, The Beaches won both Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year, turning what could have been a one-song viral moment into a broader national breakthrough.
No Hard Feelings followed in 2025 and extended that momentum, with "Last Girls at the Party" spending 11 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard Canada's Modern Rock Airplay chart. The group was named Billboard Canada's Women of the Year in 2025, the first band to receive the publication's flagship honour, and won the 2026 JUNO for Group of the Year. The Beaches matter in contemporary Canadian rock because their biggest success arrived after more than a decade of development: rather than being created by a viral platform, they used one viral song to expose a fully formed band, then converted that attention into sustained radio, touring and international growth.
