Tegan and Sara
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Calgary-born twin sisters Tegan and Sara Quin began writing and performing as teenagers, first building an audience through acoustic and indie-rock songs before gradually widening their sound. After signing to Neil Young's Vapor Records in 2000, they developed a catalogue that moved from the leaner rock of If It Was You toward the sharper, emotionally detailed songwriting of So Jealous and The Con. Those records gave the duo a substantial international indie audience and made their intertwined voices and contrasting songwriting perspectives the centre of an increasingly recognizable body of work.
Sainthood pushed further into rhythmic and electronic textures, while 2013's Heartthrob represented a deliberate pop transformation. "Closer" became their biggest mainstream single, and Heartthrob earned three JUNO Awards, proving the duo could expand into synth-pop without abandoning the lyrical intimacy that had defined their earlier albums. Love You to Death, Hey, I'm Just Like You and Crybaby continued that evolution, while their songs reached new audiences through film, television and collaborations far outside the indie-rock scene where they started.
Their significance also extends beyond records. Tegan and Sara have been visible queer artists throughout their career, established the Tegan and Sara Foundation to support LGBTQ+ women and girls and received the JUNO Humanitarian Award in 2024. Their memoir High School also became a television series, expanding their cultural reach into publishing and screen work. Across more than two decades, they have helped connect Canadian indie rock, mainstream pop and queer cultural advocacy without treating those identities as separate projects.
