Sum 41

Ajax, Ontario, Canada

Formed in Ajax, Ontario in the mid-1990s, Sum 41 grew from a local punk band into one of Canada’s most internationally successful rock exports of the 2000s. Their 2001 debut album All Killer No Filler broke through on the strength of “Fat Lip,” whose collision of pop-punk hooks, rap cadences and metal energy gave the band an identity that was broader and rougher-edged than the era’s most polished punk-pop. “In Too Deep” and “Motivation” helped turn the album into a global success.

Rather than remain fixed in that sound, Sum 41 moved toward heavier and more politically charged material. Does This Look Infected? sharpened the band’s punk and metal instincts, while Chuck, named after a United Nations worker who helped the band escape violence while filming in the Democratic Republic of Congo, pushed further into metal and serious subject matter. Later albums continued to alternate between melodic punk, hard rock and metal, building a catalogue that lasted well beyond the early-2000s pop-punk boom.

Sum 41 sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, earned two JUNO Awards and a GRAMMY nomination, and became a durable point of reference for Canadian punk and alternative rock internationally. The band completed its farewell tour in 2025 and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame that same year, closing a career that carried an Ajax high-school punk group to a global audience.
