Stars
Montréal, Québec, Canada
Stars began around Torquil Campbell and Chris Seligman before the group settled into Montréal and became closely associated with the city's early-2000s independent-music rise. With Amy Millan and Evan Cranley joining the core, the band developed an elegant form of indie pop built on alternating male-female vocals, electronic texture, chamber-pop detail and lyrics preoccupied with romance, memory and mortality. Heart established the sound, but 2004's Set Yourself on Fire became the breakthrough.
Set Yourself on Fire turned songs such as “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” and “Ageless Beauty” into enduring Canadian indie staples and earned a JUNO nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. In Our Bedroom After the War expanded the arrangements and political scope, while later albums kept returning to the tension that defined the band from the beginning: intimate relationship writing delivered with theatrical scale. Their connection to the wider Arts & Crafts and Broken Social Scene orbit also placed Stars inside a broader network rather than an isolated scene success.
Stars helped make emotionally literate, orchestral indie pop one of the recognizable sounds of Canadian music in the 2000s. Their longevity matters because the band did not simply preserve the aesthetic of that era; it kept refining a distinctive shared-vocal approach while maintaining an unusually direct relationship with listeners for whom those songs became part of the emotional vocabulary of Canadian indie rock.
