Snow

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Toronto-born Darrin O'Brien, better known as Snow, grew up in North York's Allenbury Gardens in a neighbourhood where Jamaican reggae and dancehall were part of the everyday musical environment. That influence became central to his rapid-fire vocal style and led to a connection with New York rapper and producer MC Shan. Snow's 1993 debut, 12 Inches of Snow, turned that hybrid of reggae, dancehall, rap and pop into an unlikely global breakthrough through "Informer," a song based on his own arrest and incarceration. The single spent seven consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, reached No. 2 in the United Kingdom and topped charts in several European markets, making Snow one of the first Canadian urban-music artists of the era to achieve truly international pop scale.

Snow spent the rest of the 1990s resisting the idea that his career could be reduced to one crossover hit. The 1995 album Murder Love was recorded largely in Jamaica and moved further toward dancehall, with appearances and production from established Jamaican artists. The remix of "Anything for You" became a major Jamaican hit, while later records such as Mind on the Moon and Two Hands Clapping returned him to Canadian radio through songs including "Everybody Wants to Be Like You" and "Legal." His catalogue never again matched the extraordinary commercial peak of "Informer," but it showed a sustained commitment to reggae rather than a short-lived stylistic detour.

The long afterlife of "Informer" reinforced Snow's place in Canadian music history. Daddy Yankee reworked its melody and cadence for the 2019 hit "Con Calma," bringing Snow onto a new international chart hit more than 25 years after his debut. In 2023, "Informer" was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, recognizing a record that helped make reggae-rap visible inside global pop at a moment when Canadian hip-hop and Caribbean-influenced music still had limited access to the country's mainstream industry. Snow's career is complicated, singular and difficult to separate from the multicultural Toronto environment that shaped his sound, but its scale made him an important early example of Canadian urban music travelling far beyond the domestic market.
