Northern Dial Artist Profile
Shawn Hook
South Slocan, British Columbia, Canada
Raised in rural British Columbia, Shawn Hook developed first as a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, studying piano and later audio engineering before his own pop career accelerated. Early releases under his birth name preceded his transition to Shawn Hook and the 2012 album Cosmonaut and the Girl, where electronic and dance-pop elements began to replace the more acoustic sound of his first recordings. His experience writing music for television also gave him a practical songwriting background before Canadian radio became the centre of his career.
The 2015 album Analog Love produced "Sound of Your Heart," the song that brought Hook his widest international exposure and became a multi-platinum Canadian single. He followed with "Reminding Me," a duet with Vanessa Hudgens that also achieved major Canadian certification, while My Side of Your Story extended the polished pop direction. Across this period Hook earned multiple JUNO nominations, appeared on major U.S. television and accumulated hundreds of millions of streams, moving a British Columbia songwriter into a genuinely cross-border pop audience.
Canada's Walk of Fame recognized Hook with the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour in 2017, an award aimed at young Canadian artists making an international impact. Later releases included collaborations such as "Used To You" with Serena Ryder and, after treatment for cancer in 2023, the 2024 project Beauty in Surrender marked another personal and professional return. Hook's career is best understood as a long songwriting progression rather than a single-hit story: regional beginnings, television composition, national radio and international pop all feed into the same catalogue.
