Northern Dial Artist Profile

Shad

London, Ontario, Canada

Born in Kenya to Rwandan parents and raised in London, Ontario, Shadrach Kabango built one of Canadian hip-hop's most respected careers through a combination of technical lyricism, humour, social observation and unusually reflective writing. His early albums established him outside the dominant commercial rap lane, while The Old Prince became a breakthrough and helped position him as a major voice in Canadian independent hip-hop.

Shad followed with TSOL and Flying Colours, records that deepened his reputation for writing about identity, immigration, relationships, faith and public life without sacrificing playfulness or craft. He has been repeatedly recognized by the Polaris Music Prize and won the JUNO Award for Rap Recording of the Year, while collaborations with artists including Lights, k-os and Saukrates connect his catalogue to several strands of Canadian music.

His cultural reach expanded further through broadcasting. As host of the documentary series Hip-Hop Evolution, Shad helped tell the history of the genre to an international audience, bringing the same curiosity and contextual thinking that define his songwriting. That combination of acclaimed records and music-history work has made him an important bridge between Canadian rap as a creative practice and hip-hop as a broader culture.
