Saukrates

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Ottawa-born and Toronto-rooted rapper, singer and producer Saukrates is one of the architects of modern Canadian hip-hop. He began releasing music in the mid-1990s, co-founded Capitol Hill Music and built a reputation as both an MC and producer at a time when Canadian rap artists had few durable routes to major-label support. His early single "Still Caught Up" earned a JUNO nomination, and his 1999 debut The Underground Tapes became an influential document of Toronto's late-1990s underground.

Saukrates' career has always moved between roles. He signed major-label deals, worked as a producer and collaborator, and expanded into R&B as part of Big Black Lincoln. His credits and collaborations connect him to Redman, Nas, Nelly Furtado, k-os, Classified, Maestro Fresh Wes and other major figures, while his mentorship also mattered behind the scenes: producer Boi-1da has cited Saukrates as an early supporter who helped open doors in Toronto's music community.

Later releases including Season One, Season 2 and the long-delayed Bad Addiction extended a catalogue that spans boom-bap, melodic rap and R&B. More than a conventional solo career, Saukrates represents the connective tissue of Canadian hip-hop: an artist, producer and mentor whose influence runs through several generations of Toronto music.
