Sarah McLachlan
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Halifax-born singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan became one of the defining Canadian voices of 1990s adult alternative and singer-songwriter pop. After relocating to Vancouver and signing with Nettwerk, she developed a spacious, emotionally direct style on albums including Touch, Solace and Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. Her international breakthrough deepened with 1997’s Surfacing, which included “Building a Mystery,” “Adia” and “Angel” and established her as a major crossover artist.
McLachlan’s influence extends beyond her own catalogue. She co-founded Lilith Fair, the late-1990s touring festival built around women artists at a time when promoters and radio programmers often treated female performers as competing for limited space. The festival became both a commercial success and an important platform for women across pop, rock, folk and alternative music.
McLachlan has won multiple JUNO and GRAMMY Awards and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 2017. Her combination of introspective songwriting, atmospheric production and institution-building gives her a lasting place in Canadian music history beyond the ballads for which she is best known.
