Sarah Harmer

Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Burlington-born Sarah Harmer first built a reputation in Ontario's independent rock community with Weeping Tile before moving toward a solo career at the end of the 1990s. Her 2000 album You Were Here became the breakthrough, pairing intimate songwriting with understated folk-rock arrangements on songs such as "Basement Apt." and "Lodestar." Rather than treating singer-songwriter music as separate from the Canadian indie-rock network around her, Harmer carried the community and collaborative sensibility of her band years into a quieter solo vocabulary.

All of Our Names and the roots-oriented I'm a Mountain expanded that catalogue, with the latter emerging partly from Harmer's I Love the Escarpment tour. The project connected music directly to her campaign against development threats around Ontario's Niagara Escarpment, making environmental advocacy an unusually concrete part of her artistic life. She returned to a fuller electric sound on Oh Little Fire before stepping away from album releases for much of the 2010s while remaining active in environmental work.

Are You Gone arrived in 2020 after a decade between studio albums and deliberately reconnected personal songwriting with questions about climate, place and civic responsibility. Harmer's importance in Canadian music comes from the consistency of those connections: Ontario geography, independent-rock community, folk tradition and environmental activism are not separate chapters in her career but overlapping parts of the same body of work.
