Point Blank
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Point Blank grew out of Toronto's Regent Park in the early 1990s, with a large crew of emcees and producer Pikihed using rap to document the neighbourhood around them. The group developed outside the major-label system and built its own Tilt Rock Records infrastructure, giving songs about policing, poverty, family pressure and street life a platform that did not depend on the Canadian industry's limited support for rap. Early releases such as "Retaliation" and the Point Blank Underground collection established a catalogue rooted as much in place and community as in individual personalities.
During the 2000s, Point Blank became increasingly visible beyond Regent Park without abandoning that perspective. "Thin Line" and "Want It Wit Us" earned radio and MuchMusic attention, while "Born and Raised in the Ghetto" became the group's signature statement and received a MuchMusic Video Award nomination. Their long-awaited self-titled 2008 album arrived through Tilt Rock and Koch Entertainment Canada, bringing years of independent material and local momentum into a national release. The record was nominated for Rap Recording of the Year at the 2009 JUNO Awards.
Point Blank's significance is inseparable from Regent Park itself. Long before redevelopment transformed the neighbourhood and before Toronto street rap became an internationally watched scene, the group was using self-owned infrastructure to put Regent Park stories into circulation on Canadian radio, television and record shelves. Their career offers a direct line from 1990s neighbourhood-based independent rap to a later Toronto culture in which local identity, entrepreneurship and highly specific geography became central parts of how artists presented themselves.
