Mississauga, Ontario, Canada
Mississauga singer, songwriter and producer PARTYNEXTDOOR became the first artist signed to Drake’s OVO Sound label in 2013 and quickly helped define the label’s atmospheric approach to contemporary R&B. His self-titled debut project and PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO paired sparse production, blurred vocals and Caribbean rhythmic influence with emotionally detached relationship writing. Songs such as “Break from Toronto” and “Recognize” established a solo audience while connecting his sound directly to the broader Toronto R&B ecosystem.
His influence grew even further through songwriting and production for other artists. PARTYNEXTDOOR co-wrote Rihanna’s “Work,” a nine-week Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, and contributed to major records for artists including DJ Khaled, Beyoncé, Post Malone and Usher. His Drake collaboration “Come and See Me” earned a GRAMMY nomination for Best R&B Song, while later projects including PARTYNEXTDOOR 3, PARTYMOBILE and PARTYNEXTDOOR 4 continued his own catalogue alongside behind-the-scenes writing.
That dual career is central to his significance. PARTYNEXTDOOR is both a key architect of the moody, minimal Toronto R&B sound associated with OVO and a pop songwriter whose ideas travelled far outside that scene. In 2024, the National Music Publishers Association named him its top artist-songwriter for the second quarter after a run of major U.S. certifications, underscoring how much of his impact exists both on his own records and inside other artists’ hits.
