Nelly Furtado
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Victoria-born singer-songwriter Nelly Furtado broke internationally with 2000's Whoa, Nelly!, a debut that moved freely between pop, folk, trip-hop and Latin-influenced rhythms. The album produced the hits “I'm Like a Bird” and “Turn Off the Light,” with the former winning the GRAMMY for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Rather than repeat the formula, Furtado leaned further into her Portuguese heritage and global influences on Folklore before making another sharp turn with 2006's Loose.
Created in close collaboration with Timbaland, Loose became her biggest commercial album and produced a run of international hits including “Promiscuous,” “Maneater,” “Say It Right” and “All Good Things (Come to an End).” Its mix of R&B, hip-hop, electronic pop and club music made Furtado one of the defining crossover artists of the mid-2000s. She continued working across languages and styles on Mi Plan, The Spirit Indestructible and The Ride, while collaborations with artists including Juanes reinforced the international outlook that had been present from the beginning.
After several years away from the centre of pop, Furtado returned to active recording and touring in the 2020s, releasing the album 7 in 2024. In 2026 she was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, recognition of a career that helped make eclecticism itself a viable Canadian pop identity on the world stage.
