Northern Dial Artist Profile
NAV
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto-born Navraj Singh Goraya, known as NAV, came up in Rexdale as both a producer and recording artist. His earliest industry attention came behind the boards before his own hazy, Auto-Tuned records began circulating online, eventually bringing him into The Weeknd's XO ecosystem. The 2017 self-titled NAV project and Metro Boomin collaboration Perfect Timing established his minimalist melodic-trap vocabulary, built around subdued delivery, spacious production and an intentionally detached persona.
RECKLESS broadened his major-label catalogue, but 2019's Bad Habits marked the commercial leap: the album debuted at No. 1 on both the Billboard Canadian Albums chart and the U.S. Billboard 200. NAV subsequently sustained that audience with projects including Good Intentions, Demons Protected by Angels and OMW2 Rexdale, while high-profile collaborations with artists such as Travis Scott, Gunna and Lil Uzi Vert kept his production and vocals circulating through the wider American rap ecosystem. His appearance on Internet Money's "Lemonade" also reached the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10.
NAV occupies a distinct place in Canadian hip-hop history. He is one of the first Punjabi-Canadian rappers to become a consistent commercial presence at the highest level of North American rap, and his career reflects Toronto's transformation from a city seeking U.S. validation into a city capable of feeding artists directly into global streaming culture. His understated vocal style has been divisive, but the longevity and chart scale of his catalogue make his significance difficult to reduce to taste alone.
