Muzion
Montréal, Québec, Canada
Formed in Montréal in 1996 by J.Kyll, Imposs and Dramatik, Muzion became one of the foundational groups of Québec hip-hop by making the city's Haitian diaspora central to the music rather than peripheral to it. The trio moved naturally among French, English and Haitian Creole, bringing the language and experience of neighbourhoods including Saint-Michel into a Québec rap landscape that was still defining itself. Their 1999 debut Mentalité moune morne… (Ils n'ont pas compris) paired dense, socially engaged writing with a distinctly Montréal perspective and won the Félix for Hip-Hop Album of the Year, establishing Muzion as both a critical force and a cultural point of identification for Black and immigrant audiences in Québec.
Their second album, J'rêvolutionne, followed in 2002 and also earned a Félix for Hip-Hop Album of the Year. The group's most enduring anthem, "La vi ti nèg," fused hip-hop with kompa and celebrated Haitian life in Montréal with a combination of resilience, neighbourhood pride and joy. The song won a Canadian Urban Music Award in 2004, and its influence continued long after Muzion's initial recording run: in 2025, SOCAN gave "La vi ti nèg" its Cultural Impact Award, the first time the honour had gone to a hip-hop song in the gala's history. Artists from later generations of Québec rap have repeatedly identified Muzion as proof that their own communities, accents and cultural references could belong in the province's mainstream music conversation.
That legacy received another national acknowledgement in January 2026, when Canada Post honoured Muzion alongside Maestro Fresh Wes and Michie Mee in a Black History Month stamp series celebrating Canadian hip-hop trailblazers. For Northern Dial, Muzion matters because they connect several histories at once: the rise of francophone rap, Montréal's Haitian cultural presence, women in Québec hip-hop through J.Kyll's visibility, and a broader Canadian story in which local identity became a source of musical authority rather than something artists had to dilute to be heard.
