Mother Mother
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Mother Mother began in British Columbia in 2005 around siblings Ryan and Molly Guldemond, developing from a vocal-driven acoustic project into a Vancouver-based alternative-rock band. After an early independent release under the name Mother, the group's material was reworked as Touch Up, followed by O My Heart in 2008. Songs such as "Hayloft" and "Verbatim" established the band's defining tension: tightly stacked vocals and sharply theatrical writing set against angular guitars, folk instincts and pop hooks. Eureka and The Sticks broadened that language while building a durable Canadian alternative audience.
The career took an unusual turn more than a decade later. In 2020, tracks from Touch Up and O My Heart surged on TikTok, especially "Hayloft," introducing the band to a much younger international audience. Rather than functioning as a brief nostalgia spike, the revival translated into major streaming growth and touring across multiple continents. Inside arrived during that second act, followed by Grief Chapter in 2024 and Nostalgia in 2025, the latter marking two decades of Mother Mother while reconnecting with the acoustic and vocal interplay of the group's beginnings.
That late breakthrough is central to Mother Mother's Canadian significance. The band spent years as a recognizable domestic alternative act before an older catalogue found a new global context on social platforms, demonstrating how streaming-era discovery can radically change the scale of a career without requiring a new hit to erase the earlier work. Their longevity also rests on a sound that remains immediately identifiable: unusual vocal harmonies, nervy rhythms and lyrics that make identity, alienation and emotional extremity feel communal enough for a festival crowd.
