Moka Only

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Born Daniel Denton and raised in British Columbia, Moka Only began recording well before Vancouver hip-hop had much national infrastructure. He became part of the city's underground network in the 1990s, recording solo material, working in groups including the early Swollen Members lineup and developing a self-contained approach in which rapping, singing and beatmaking were all parts of the same practice. His 1995 debut Upcoast Relix began a catalogue that would grow at an extraordinary pace, with independent tapes, albums, collaborations and instrumental projects arriving far more frequently than the conventional label cycle allowed.

Moka's best-known mainstream chapter came through Swollen Members. He rejoined the group during its early-2000s commercial breakthrough and appeared on releases including Monsters in the Closet and Heavy, a period that brought major Canadian exposure and multiple Juno wins around the group. But the larger story of his career is the solo work around and after that success. Albums such as The Desired Effect, Vermilion and the long-running Airport series moved between jazzy sample-based production, synthesizers, singing, understated rhyme writing and deliberately low-key experimentation. By 2011, Exclaim! was already describing a discography of more than 60 albums, collaborative projects and beat tapes.

That volume is not simply a novelty. Moka Only's catalogue represents a durable model of independent Canadian hip-hop built around self-production, home recording and constant stylistic movement rather than a handful of flagship releases. His collaborations have connected him with artists including J Dilla, MF DOOM, Kool Keith and Del the Funky Homosapien, while later records such as Summer 2002 and In and of Itself have continued the same self-directed approach decades into his career. His significance to Canadian rap comes from both sides of that history: participation in one of Vancouver's biggest crossover groups and an unusually deep underground catalogue that kept expanding long after the major-label spotlight moved elsewhere.
