Michie Mee

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Born Michelle McCullock in Jamaica and raised in Toronto, Michie Mee began rapping professionally as a teenager and became one of the first Canadian MCs to build meaningful connections with the New York hip-hop industry. Her early work brought her into the orbit of Boogie Down Productions, and the 1987 single "Elements of Style" helped establish a voice that moved naturally between hip-hop, reggae and Jamaican patois. In 1988, she became the first Canadian rapper to sign with a major U.S. label, a breakthrough that arrived before Canada had a durable commercial infrastructure for domestic hip-hop.

Her 1991 debut album Jamaican Funk – Canadian Style made that cross-border and cross-Caribbean identity explicit. Rather than imitating an American rap template, Michie Mee placed dancehall phrasing, reggae rhythm and Toronto hip-hop inside the same frame, creating a sound that anticipated the Caribbean influence that would later become one of the most recognizable features of Toronto popular music. She continued to resist easy categorization through the 1990s, including a period with Raggadeath, whose mixture of reggae and heavy rock pushed her into another hybrid setting. Her second album, The First Cut Is the Deepest, arrived in 2000 and reaffirmed her place as a working rapper rather than only a historical first.

Michie Mee's importance to Canadian hip-hop is larger than a single milestone. She helped prove that a Canadian MC could participate in the wider North American rap economy while sounding unmistakably shaped by Toronto's Caribbean communities. Later honours have increasingly recognized that role: she has received lifetime and hall-of-fame awards within Canadian urban music, and in January 2026 Canada Post issued a commemorative stamp honouring her alongside Maestro Fresh Wes and Muzion as one of the country's hip-hop trailblazers. Her career is part of the foundation beneath the multilingual, Caribbean-influenced Toronto sound that later became internationally familiar.
