Metric

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Metric formed around singer-keyboardist Emily Haines and guitarist-producer James Shaw, eventually settling into the lineup with bassist Joshua Winstead and drummer Joules Scott-Key. Although the members moved between New York, Montreal and Toronto early on, the band became closely identified with Toronto's interconnected indie community, particularly through Haines and Shaw's ties to Broken Social Scene. Their 2003 album Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? established a wiry combination of new wave, indie rock and electronic textures.

Live It Out expanded the band's audience, but 2009's Fantasies marked the major international breakthrough. Songs such as “Help I'm Alive” and “Gimme Sympathy” balanced synth-driven polish with rock dynamics, helping Metric move from clubs into theatres, festivals and arenas. Synthetica pushed further into electronic production, while later albums including Pagans in Vegas, Art of Doubt and Formentera showed a band capable of shifting the guitar-synth balance without abandoning Haines' distinctive lyrical perspective.

Metric's longevity matters within the story of Canadian indie rock. Many acts associated with the early-2000s scene were defined by a particular moment; Metric developed that scene's collaborative and stylistic openness into a sustained international career. Their catalogue helped make Canadian alternative music feel less like a regional wave and more like an enduring part of the global rock landscape.
