Matthew Good Band
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Matthew Good Band emerged from the Vancouver-area alternative-rock scene in the mid-1990s and became one of Canada’s dominant rock-radio acts around the turn of the millennium. Built around singer-songwriter Matthew Good, the group first attracted national attention with Last of the Ghetto Astronauts before 1997’s Underdogs produced enduring Canadian alternative staples including “Apparitions” and “Everything Is Automatic.”
Beautiful Midnight expanded the band’s sound and commercial reach through “Hello Time Bomb,” “Load Me Up” and “Strange Days.” The album won the 2000 JUNO Award for Best Rock Album, while the band won Best Group, confirming its place near the centre of Canadian alternative rock at the time. The Audio of Being followed in 2001, after which the group dissolved and Good continued under his own name.
Although the band’s run was relatively short, its impact was concentrated. Matthew Good Band helped define the darker, literate side of late-1990s Canadian rock, balancing large radio choruses with anxious social commentary and a more confrontational lyrical voice. Its catalogue remains distinct from Good’s later solo work and captures a specific period when Canadian alternative bands could become national stars largely through domestic radio, MuchMusic and touring.
