marianas trench

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Vancouver's Marianas Trench grew from the mid-2000s Canadian pop-rock circuit into a band defined by unusually elaborate vocal arrangements, narrative album structures and the studio ambition of singer, songwriter and producer Josh Ramsay. The 2006 debut Fix Me established the group, but Masterpiece Theatre and Ever After turned that foundation into a distinctive style built around stacked harmonies, recurring musical themes and songs designed to work both as radio singles and pieces of larger album-length arcs.

Ever After became a major Canadian commercial breakthrough, producing songs including "Haven't Had Enough," "Fallout" and "Stutter" and earning JUNO nominations for Album of the Year and Pop Album of the Year. The band continued the theatrical approach on Astoria and Phantoms, while Ramsay's work outside the group further extended its influence: he co-wrote and produced Carly Rae Jepsen's global hit "Call Me Maybe." Marianas Trench's longevity has been especially notable in Canada, where the band built a multi-platinum catalogue and a large touring audience without abandoning increasingly elaborate arrangements.

The sixth album Haven arrived in 2024, using the hero's-journey framework as the basis for another heavily orchestrated concept record. Across nearly two decades, Marianas Trench has occupied an unusual place between pop-punk, mainstream pop and progressive-minded studio craft. Their significance comes from making maximalism part of their identity: big choruses and radio accessibility coexist with long-form sequencing, orchestration and vocal construction that reward listening beyond the singles.
