MAGIC!

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

MAGIC! formed in Toronto around singer-songwriter and producer Nasri Atweh, guitarist Mark Pellizzer, bassist Ben Spivak and drummer Alex Tanas, combining pop songwriting with reggae and rock rhythms. Atweh was already an established hit writer before the group launched, and that studio experience gave MAGIC! an unusually polished debut. Their first album, Don't Kill the Magic, arrived in 2014 with "Rude," a breezy reggae-pop single that moved rapidly from Canadian radio to an international audience.

"Rude" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in July 2014 and stayed there for six weeks, making MAGIC! the first Canadian band since Nickelback in 2002 to top the chart. The song also won the JUNO for Single of the Year and became one of the clearest examples of a Canadian band's ability to break globally during the streaming-era transition. Follow-up singles such as "Don't Kill the Magic" extended the group's visibility, while later albums Primary Colours and Expectations pushed the sound toward broader pop and R&B territory.

MAGIC!'s place in Canadian pop history rests primarily on the scale of that breakthrough, but the band's story is also about songwriting infrastructure. Atweh's career as a writer and producer connected the group to a wider international pop network, while the band's reggae-fusion approach placed it in a lineage of Canadian artists who have adapted Caribbean musical language for mainstream audiences. Even if "Rude" remains the defining hit, its six-week U.S. No. 1 run gives MAGIC! a notable position in the country's modern pop export story.
