mac demarco

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Raised in Edmonton, Mac DeMarco became one of the most recognizable Canadian figures in 2010s indie rock by making deliberately loose, home-recorded guitar music feel both eccentric and unusually intimate. After earlier work under the name Makeout Videotape, he established the Mac DeMarco catalogue with Rock and Roll Night Club and 2 in 2012. Songs such as "Ode to Viceroy" and "My Kind of Woman" paired warped guitar tones, dry humour and melodic soft-rock instincts with a recording style that made the seams of the process part of the appeal.

Salad Days in 2014 broadened that audience and became a Polaris Music Prize Short List nominee. The record refined his woozy guitar sound while allowing more anxiety and self-examination into the writing, and tracks including "Chamber of Reflection" became enduring entry points into his catalogue. Another One and This Old Dog moved further toward restrained songwriting, acoustic guitar and synthesizers, with This Old Dog in particular turning family history, aging and distance into some of his most direct work. Here Comes the Cowboy followed in 2019 before DeMarco increasingly stepped outside the conventional album cycle.

That independent streak became structural as well as aesthetic. He launched Mac's Record Label, issued the instrumental travelogue Five Easy Hot Dogs and then released the enormous 199-track One Wayne G collection in 2023. Guitar, released in 2025, returned to a concise song-based format and was written, recorded, produced and mixed by DeMarco himself at his Los Angeles home. Across those shifts, his significance lies in how thoroughly a self-recorded Canadian indie sensibility travelled internationally: his bent guitar tones, unhurried performances and deliberately personal production language became a widely recognizable vocabulary without requiring him to move toward conventional rock polish.
