Loverboy

Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Loverboy formed in Calgary in 1979 around vocalist Mike Reno and guitarist Paul Dean, whose songwriting partnership helped define the band’s early sound. Their self-titled 1980 debut introduced “Turn Me Loose,” and the follow-up Get Lucky delivered “Working for the Weekend,” turning the group into one of the most recognizable Canadian rock acts of the era.

Reno and Dean’s songs favour immediate hooks, hard-edged guitar riffs and choruses built to land quickly. That approach carried through a catalogue that also includes “When It’s Over,” “Hot Girls in Love” and “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” while the band became a major arena and MTV presence through the 1980s.

In 2026, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame named Mike Reno and Paul Dean to its induction class, recognizing the songwriting partnership behind Loverboy’s biggest songs and its lasting place in Canadian rock.
