Northern Dial Artist Profile

Lights

Ontario, Canada

Ontario-born singer-songwriter, producer and visual artist Lights built a distinctive place in Canadian pop by treating electronic music as a flexible language rather than a fixed genre. Her early breakthrough came with "Drive My Soul" and the 2009 debut The Listening, followed by a JUNO Award for New Artist of the Year. The darker, more electronic Siberia and the polished Little Machines broadened her sound while establishing her as a consistent presence on Canadian album and singles charts.

Her career became increasingly multidisciplinary. For Skin & Earth, Lights wrote and illustrated a companion comic series alongside the album, connecting its songs to a larger fictional world rather than treating the visual component as conventional promotion. Both Little Machines and Skin & Earth won the JUNO Award for Pop Album of the Year, while collaborations across electronic, rock and alternative music have included deadmau5, Bring Me the Horizon, Felix Cartal and others.

Later projects such as Pep and A6 have continued that willingness to shift between synth-pop, alternative rock and heavier electronic textures. Nearly two decades into her recording career, Lights remains significant not simply as a Canadian pop hitmaker but as an artist who has repeatedly expanded the format of a pop career through production, visual art, comics and genre-crossing collaboration.
