Len
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto group Len began around siblings Marc and Sharon Costanzo as an independent alternative-rock project before gradually absorbing more hip-hop, electronic and sample-based production. Early releases Superstar and Get Your Legs Broke established a deliberately loose, genre-hopping identity, but the major breakthrough came with the 1999 album You Can't Stop the Bum Rush. Built with friends and collaborators including DJ Moves and D-Rock of Hip Club Groove, the record moved from rap and electronic experiments to guitar pop without trying to resolve the contradictions.
That album produced "Steal My Sunshine," one of the most internationally successful Canadian pop singles of its era. Constructed around a sample from Andrea True Connection's "More, More, More," the song paired Marc and Sharon's conversational vocals with a hazy, celebratory hook and reached the U.S. Top 10. At the 2000 JUNO Awards, Len received nominations for Best New Group, Best Alternative Album and Best Single. The scale of "Steal My Sunshine" inevitably overshadowed the rest of the catalogue, but You Can't Stop the Bum Rush makes clearer how deeply the group was connected to Toronto's alternative and hip-hop communities.
Len's place in Canadian music is therefore more interesting than a one-hit-wonder label suggests. The group arrived before genre collision became a standard pop strategy, treating indie rock, old-school hip-hop, sampling and candy-coloured pop as compatible parts of the same record. "Steal My Sunshine" remains the cultural landmark, but its endurance also keeps pointing listeners back to a band whose broader catalogue captured a particularly unruly late-1990s Toronto musical ecosystem.
