Northern Dial Artist Profile

leif vollebekk

Montréal, Québec, Canada

Ottawa-born, Montréal-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Leif Vollebekk has built a distinctly Canadian indie-folk catalogue around loose, conversational writing and performances that often feel captured in motion rather than polished into place. After the spare early records Inland and North Americana, he reached a wider audience with 2017's Twin Solitude, an album whose piano, guitar and unhurried arrangements established the intimate, improvisational character that became central to his work.

Vollebekk continued expanding that approach on New Ways and 2024's Revelation, moving from folk minimalism toward richer soul, jazz and orchestral textures without losing the immediacy of his songwriting. Revelation was recorded across studios including Sunset Sound and Dreamland, with collaborators such as drummer Jim Keltner, steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar and bassist Shahzad Ismaily; Vollebekk remained deeply involved as a producer and multi-instrumentalist.

That combination of musicianly detail and looseness has made Vollebekk an important bridge between Montréal's independent singer-songwriter tradition and an international roots audience. His catalogue is less defined by one crossover single than by a sustained body of albums that reward close listening, with narrative lyrics, expressive piano and guitar playing and arrangements that leave room for a song to breathe.
