Koriass

Québec, Canada

Québec rapper Koriass, born Emmanuel Dubois, built his career from the province's battle-rap and independent scenes into one of the most durable catalogues in modern francophone Canadian hip-hop. After emerging through battles in the early 2000s and releasing the Mort de rire EP, he joined Disques 7ième Ciel and issued Les racines dans le béton in 2008 and Petites victoires in 2011. Those records established a voice that could combine technical rap writing, humour and social observation without treating francophone hip-hop as a secondary version of an anglophone model.

The 2013 album Rue des Saules marked a major step forward, winning the Félix for Hip-Hop Album of the Year in 2014. Koriass followed the Petit Love EP with Love Suprême in 2016, another Félix-winning album that expanded his writing toward relationships, self-critique and more melodic production while earning a JUNO nomination for Francophone Album of the Year. His stature was also visible institutionally: he became the first rapper nominated for ADISQ's Male Singer of the Year category, a sign of how far Québec rap had moved toward the centre of the province's music industry.

Koriass kept that career moving through La nuit des longs couteaux, the FouKi collaboration Génies en herbe and 2022's Abri de fortune (pour fin du monde), while continuing to work with younger Québec artists. His significance lies in continuity as much as breakthrough. Between the pioneering generation represented by Dubmatique and Muzion and the later mainstream success of artists such as Loud and FouKi, Koriass helped make a long, album-driven rap career in French feel sustainable, critically visible and culturally central in Québec.
