Kaytranada
Montreal, Québec, Canada
Haitian-born and Montreal-raised producer and DJ Kaytranada developed a signature sound by treating house, funk, hip-hop, disco and R&B as parts of the same rhythmic language. He first built an international online following through remixes and beat releases, then consolidated that style on the 2016 debut album 99.9%. Its loose swing, clipped samples and collaborative vocals made Kaytranada recognizable less by one genre than by the physical feel of his drums and basslines.
The 2019 album BUBBA expanded that approach through collaborations with artists including Kali Uchis, Charlotte Day Wilson, Tinashe and Pharrell Williams. At the 2021 GRAMMY Awards, BUBBA won Best Dance/Electronic Album and “10%,” featuring Kali Uchis, won Best Dance Recording, giving Kaytranada his first two GRAMMY wins. Later work, including TIMELESS, continued to place singers and rappers inside a production style that remains distinctly his even as collaborators change.
Kaytranada’s importance to Canadian music is tied to Montreal but extends far beyond a local electronic scene. His records helped collapse boundaries between beat music, club music and contemporary R&B, and his production has become a reference point for artists seeking dance music that retains the looseness of hip-hop. JUNO coverage has described his blend of house, funk and R&B as redefining electronic music, a useful summary of why his influence reaches well outside conventional dance categories.
