July Talk

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Formed in Toronto in 2010, July Talk built its identity around contrast. Peter Dreimanis's rough baritone and Leah Fay's clearer, more elastic voice turn songs into conversations, arguments and negotiations, while the band's early music drew from garage rock, blues and indie rock. Their self-titled debut arrived in 2012 and grew through touring into a national breakthrough, eventually going gold in Canada and winning the 2015 JUNO for Alternative Album of the Year.

The group expanded that tension on Touch, which included "Push + Pull" and a collaboration with Tanya Tagaq on "Beck + Call." Rather than treating the dual-frontperson setup as a visual gimmick, July Talk made questions of power, intimacy and performance central to both the songs and its famously physical live shows. Pray for It followed in 2020 and earned another JUNO for Alternative Album of the Year, confirming that the band's initial impact had developed into sustained critical recognition.

Remember Never Before arrived in 2023 with a more spacious, synth-aware version of the band's sound while preserving the vocal friction at its centre. July Talk's significance within Canadian alternative rock lies in how thoroughly performance and songwriting reinforce one another: the band created an instantly identifiable stage language, then built enough musical depth around it to remain a major Canadian live and recording act for more than a decade.
