Joel Plaskett
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada
Dartmouth-based songwriter Joel Plaskett first became nationally visible as a member of Halifax power-pop band Thrush Hermit, whose 1999 album Clayton Park closed one chapter of the city's celebrated 1990s indie-rock era. He moved quickly into solo work and the Joel Plaskett Emergency, using Down at the Khyber and Truthfully Truthfully to establish a catalogue that could move between lean guitar rock, folk, country, lo-fi recording and sharply observed East Coast storytelling.
Plaskett repeatedly turned album structure itself into part of the songwriting. The Emergency's 2007 Ashtray Rock framed teenage memory as a rock-opera narrative, while the three-disc Three expanded his solo writing across 27 songs. Scrappy Happiness was assembled through a song-a-week recording process, and later projects continued to alternate between full-band rock, intimate acoustic work and collaborations, including the folk-rooted Solidarity with his father Bill Plaskett.
His importance to Canadian music is as much regional and infrastructural as commercial. Plaskett has kept Nova Scotia at the centre of his work, toured widely with the Emergency and built Fang Recording in Dartmouth into a home base for his own records and productions for other artists. A 2025 tribute album featuring artists including Arkells, Sloan, City and Colour and Bahamas underscored how deeply his songwriting has travelled through the Canadian independent community.
