I Mother Earth

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I Mother Earth formed in Toronto at the beginning of the 1990s around brothers Jagori and Christian Tanna, developing a rock sound that drew as readily from funk, progressive rock and percussion-heavy fusion as it did from the alternative boom around them. Their 1993 debut Dig, fronted by Edwin, introduced that combination through long, groove-oriented arrangements and strong musicianship. The group stood apart from simpler post-grunge formulas by making rhythmic complexity and instrumental interplay central to its identity.

The 1996 follow-up Scenery and Fish became the band's commercial high point, reaching double-platinum status in Canada and producing enduring rock-radio songs such as "One More Astronaut," "Another Sunday" and "Used to Be Alright." Edwin left after that period and Brian Byrne became the new vocalist for Blue Green Orange and The Quicksilver Meat Dream. The lineup change altered the vocal character without erasing the Tanna brothers' dense, groove-driven approach.

After going inactive in the early 2000s, I Mother Earth reunited in 2012 and later performed again with Edwin, reconnecting the most familiar lineup with audiences that had kept Scenery and Fish in Canadian rock circulation. The band's significance is partly technical and partly historical: I Mother Earth brought progressive and fusion-minded playing into a mainstream 1990s Canadian rock setting, giving the era a sound that was heavier and more rhythmically adventurous than the post-grunge label usually suggests.
