Hip Club Groove

Truro and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada

Hip Club Groove is a Nova Scotia hip-hop group that emerged from Truro before becoming part of Halifax's early-1990s rap and indie ecosystem. The best-known lineup paired MCs Cheklove Shakil and Derek MacKenzie with DJ Moves. Their 1993 Cool Beans EP led to Trailer Park Hip Hop on Sloan's murderecords in 1994, and the group played across genre lines at a moment when Halifax was drawing national attention for its independent music scene. Hip Club Groove later released Land of the Lost in 1996 before going quiet. In 2026, Cheklove, MacKenzie and Moves reunited for Dead Words, their first new song in 30 years, recorded for Hand'Solo Records' Bassments of Badmen 4 compilation.
