Haviah Mighty

Brampton, Ontario, Canada

Toronto-born and Brampton-raised rapper Haviah Mighty spent years developing as an MC, producer and performer before 13th Floor moved her into the centre of Canada's national hip-hop conversation. Released in 2019, the album combined technically dense rapping with songs about racism, gender, power and the pressures placed on Black women. Its Polaris Music Prize win made Mighty the first Black woman and first hip-hop artist to receive the award, turning a long independent build into a landmark moment for Canadian rap.

Mighty followed that breakthrough with Stock Exchange, a project released as a sequence of singles before being collected as an album. It won the 2022 JUNO for Rap Album/EP of the Year, making her the first woman to win that category. The record broadened her production palette and international collaborations while keeping the writing rooted in self-determination and the practical economics of being an independent artist. Her ability to shift between rapid-fire verses, melodic phrasing and self-produced tracks has remained central to her identity.

Within Canadian hip-hop, Mighty's significance comes from both the records and the barriers they crossed. Her success arrived without softening the subjects that made 13th Floor distinctive, and the Polaris and JUNO milestones gave national visibility to a career built through local scenes, live performance and independent releases. She represents a generation of Canadian rappers for whom technical skill, production fluency, social analysis and control over the business of the music are all parts of the same artistic practice.
