Northern Dial Artist Profile
Haley Smalls
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto-born Haley Smalls has built one of the more sustained independent R&B catalogues in Canada by combining expressive vocals, candid songwriting and unusually hands-on control over her recordings. Classically trained as a singer, she was recording in professional studios from a young age and later taught herself audio engineering, a skill that became central to her independence. Rather than separating performance from production, Smalls developed as an artist, songwriter and engineer at the same time, giving her work a consistency that has survived multiple changes in the R&B landscape.
Her first major run of projects began with the 2015 mixtapes This Is Me and Imagination and continued through The Cure, The Cure II, Heart of Gold and 2019's Summer Nights. Longtime collaborator Megaman helped shape a sound that balances contemporary R&B polish with a softer, more intimate vocal approach. A 2014 moment in which Beyoncé shared Smalls' cover of "Pretty Hurts" brought a burst of international attention, but Smalls ultimately doubled down on an independent path instead of treating that exposure as a route into the label system.
That long-game approach has continued through later releases including The Cure III, Timelines, 333, The Cure IV and 2025's Matches. By 2026, Smalls was touring internationally while maintaining the direct-to-fan model that had defined her career. Her significance in Canadian R&B comes less from one crossover hit than from durability and control: she has built a sizeable catalogue, developed technical authority over her own sound and shown how an independent Toronto artist can sustain audience growth without relying on a single industry breakthrough.
