Grimes
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Vancouver-born Claire Boucher developed Grimes after moving to Montréal and becoming immersed in the city's DIY electronic scene. Early releases Geidi Primes and Halfaxa established a homemade, otherworldly aesthetic, but Visions was the international breakthrough. Built largely through self-directed production, the album fused electronic music, dream pop, dance rhythms and layered vocals into songs such as "Oblivion" and "Genesis," placing Boucher among the most distinctive Canadian artists to emerge from the early-2010s independent electronic underground.
Art Angels dramatically expanded the sound. Written and recorded as a solo production project, it brought more live instrumentation, brighter pop structures and sharper contrasts to songs including "Flesh Without Blood" and "Kill V. Maim." Miss Anthropocene then turned climate anxiety and human extinction into a darker conceptual frame. Across these records, Grimes also treated visual art, video, character design and technology as extensions of the music rather than secondary promotional elements, making the project as much about world-building as conventional singer-songwriter identity.
Grimes matters in Canadian music because the project helped collapse boundaries between experimental electronic production and internet-era pop. Boucher's insistence on producing and engineering much of her own work also challenged assumptions about authorship around female electronic artists. Her later interest in virtual performers, synthetic voices and AI has been divisive, but it follows a long-running tendency in the project: using new tools, imagined identities and digital culture as material for pop experimentation rather than treating technology as separate from the art.
