Glenn Lewis
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Kitchener-born and Toronto-raised singer-songwriter Glenn Lewis emerged from the city's late-1990s R&B circuit with a voice that immediately invited comparisons to Stevie Wonder but developed its own quiet intensity. Early singles "The Thing to Do" and "Bout Your Love" earned consecutive JUNO nominations, and his appearance on Baby Blue Soundcrew's "Only Be in Love" helped place him inside the collaborative Toronto urban-music network that was taking shape before the city had a stable international R&B pipeline.
That local momentum led to Epic Records and the 2002 debut World Outside My Window. Produced largely with Dre & Vidal, the album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, while "Don't You Forget It" crossed from R&B radio to the Hot 100 and became Lewis's signature recording. The song won the JUNO for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year, and the album reinforced his reputation as one of Canada's strongest voices in the neo-soul movement. Lewis also toured with Alicia Keys and later appeared on Stanley Clarke's version of "Where Is the Love," which received a Grammy nomination.
Lewis never followed that breakthrough with the conventional major-label arc that seemed likely. Shelved projects slowed his momentum, but later releases including Moment of Truth showed that the appeal of his music had always rested more on songwriting and vocal craft than on one commercial moment. His place in Canadian R&B is important because World Outside My Window proved that a Toronto-developed soul artist could compete directly in the U.S. neo-soul market during one of the genre's strongest periods.
