Finger Eleven

Burlington, Ontario, Canada

Finger Eleven grew out of a high-school band in Burlington, Ontario, where Scott Anderson, Sean Anderson, James Black and Rick Jackett first played together under the name Rainbow Butt Monkeys. After an early funk-rock phase, the group adopted the Finger Eleven name and moved toward a darker alternative and post-grunge sound on Tip and The Greyest of Blue Skies. That evolution mattered because the band was never locked into one version of late-1990s rock; heavier guitar textures, unusual rhythms and Scott Anderson's tense vocal delivery gave the early records an identity that travelled beyond the Canadian club circuit.

The 2003 album Finger Eleven brought the major crossover. "One Thing" revealed a quieter, more melodic side of the band and helped the record reach platinum status in Canada and gold in the United States. Instead of repeating the ballad formula, Them vs. You vs. Me pivoted again: the funk-driven "Paralyzer" became an international hit, and the album won the 2008 JUNO Award for Rock Album of the Year. Later releases including Life Turns Electric and Five Crooked Lines kept the band active on Canadian rock radio, while the 2020s brought renewed touring and new music after a long gap between studio albums.

Finger Eleven's Canadian significance comes from that adaptability and staying power. Few bands from the country's post-grunge era moved as successfully between heavy alternative rock, acoustic crossover and danceable funk-rock while maintaining an identifiable core. Their catalogue spans multiple generations of rock radio, from Tip through "One Thing" and "Paralyzer," making them more than a one-hit export and placing them among the durable Ontario rock bands that translated domestic success into a substantial U.S. audience.
