Felix Cartal
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Vancouver producer Felix Cartal began in the harder edge of the late-2000s electro-house boom before gradually developing into one of Canada's most reliable melodic dance-pop producers. Born Taelor Deitcher, he came out of a punk background and signed with Steve Aoki's Dim Mak label, releasing Popular Music in 2010 and Different Faces in 2012. Those records established him internationally as part of the festival-era electronic scene, but they also set up a longer evolution away from distortion-heavy club music toward more song-driven production.
That shift became especially clear on 2018's Next Season, where Cartal leaned into melodic house, pop structures and emotionally direct vocal collaborations. His work with Canadian singer Lights on "Love Me" became a major domestic success and won the 2020 JUNO for Dance Recording of the Year. The Sophie Simmons collaboration "Mine" also reached platinum status in Canada, while Expensive Sounds for Nice People gathered those singles into a fuller statement of his second-act sound. The album paired dance production with singers including Kiiara, KROY and Karen Harding and showed how far Cartal had moved from his early electro identity.
Cartal's career matters because it spans several distinct eras of Canadian electronic music without being trapped in any of them. He moved from blog-era electro to polished streaming-era house while retaining a recognizable preference for strong hooks and vocal songwriting. Later work, including 2025's I, Sabotage, extended that trajectory rather than simply revisiting past formulas, making Felix Cartal a useful link between Canada's early EDM export wave and a more mature, pop-oriented electronic scene.
