Esthero
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto singer-songwriter Esthero emerged in the late 1990s with a sound that sat between trip-hop, R&B, jazz and alternative pop at a moment when those scenes were only beginning to overlap in the Canadian mainstream. Working initially with producer Doc McKinney, she released the debut album Breath from Another in 1998. Its atmospheric production, live instrumentation and songs such as "Heaven Sent" and the title track gave Esthero an identity distinct from the era's more rigidly separated rock, dance and R&B formats. The album was nominated for Best Alternative Album at the 1999 JUNO Awards and became a cult touchstone for listeners drawn to adventurous late-1990s pop production.
A long gap followed before Esthero returned with the 2005 EP We R in Need of a Musical Revolution! and the album Wikked Lil' Grrrls. By then her music had widened further, incorporating orchestral pop, hip-hop collaborations and cabaret-inflected songwriting rather than attempting to reproduce the mood of her debut. Between her own releases, she remained active through soundtrack work and collaborations, including recordings with artists from Black Eyed Peas and Goodie Mob to Saul Williams. That flexibility helped establish her as a vocalist and writer whose career reached beyond the conventional album cycle.
Esthero matters in Canadian music because Breath from Another anticipated a kind of genre-fluid Toronto pop that would become much more common in the following decade. Her catalogue never followed a straightforward commercial arc, but its combination of electronic production, soul phrasing and alternative songwriting made her an important bridge between underground club and trip-hop culture and a broader Canadian pop audience. The later work reinforces that reputation: Esthero has treated stylistic freedom, rather than consistency of format, as the through-line of her career.
