Destroyer

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Destroyer is the long-running Vancouver project of singer-songwriter Dan Bejar, whose catalogue has made constant stylistic change part of its identity. Bejar began recording under the name in the mid-1990s while immersed in Vancouver's independent music scene, developing an elliptical, literary approach to songwriting that could move from lo-fi recordings to theatrical art rock without losing its authorial voice. His parallel role as an early member and songwriter in The New Pornographers connected Destroyer to the wider Canadian indie boom of the 2000s, even as his own records remained more idiosyncratic.

Albums including Streethawk: A Seduction and Destroyer's Rubies expanded Bejar's reputation for dense language, unstable characters and songs that resist straightforward narrative. The major crossover arrived with Kaputt in 2011, when Destroyer pivoted toward soft rock, jazz-pop, synthesizers and saxophone in a record that brought the project to a much larger international audience. Rather than repeat that sound, Bejar continued to change arrangements and production approaches across later albums including Poison Season, Have We Met and LABYRINTHITIS.

Destroyer's longevity is significant because Bejar has sustained a deeply Vancouver-rooted body of work while remaining difficult to classify. His songs frequently reflect the city's geography, music community and uneasy transformations, but their reach has become international. The 2025 album Dan's Boogie extended a catalogue approaching three decades, reinforcing Destroyer as one of Canada's most distinctive examples of a songwriter using the album format as an ongoing space for reinvention rather than a fixed brand.
