Northern Dial Artist Profile
Default
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Formed in Vancouver around singer Dallas Smith, guitarist Jeremy Hora, bassist Dave Benedict and drummer Danny Craig, Default arrived during the early-2000s post-grunge boom with unusually immediate commercial momentum. Chad Kroeger helped the band secure industry attention and served as an executive producer on its 2001 debut The Fallout. The album's lead single "Wasting My Time" crossed from Canadian rock radio into the United States, giving the group an international breakthrough and helping The Fallout reach platinum status in both Canada and the U.S.
Default followed with Elocation in 2003, One Thing Remains in 2005 and Comes and Goes in 2009, maintaining a substantial Canadian rock-radio presence even as the broader post-grunge moment changed. Songs such as "Deny," "Live a Lie" and "Count on Me" extended the catalogue beyond its defining hit. The group's career also became notable in retrospect because Smith later reinvented himself as one of Canada's most successful contemporary country singers, making Default an unusual bridge between two major Canadian commercial-radio worlds.
The band's significance is clearest when placed inside the western Canadian rock infrastructure of the period. Default emerged alongside a generation of acts that turned Vancouver-area hard rock into a major North American export, but its best-known song has outlasted the format cycle that produced it. The group's later reunions, including a 2026 tour marking the 25th anniversary of The Fallout, underline how durable that early catalogue became for Canadian rock audiences.
