Deborah Cox
Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Toronto-born singer, songwriter and actor Deborah Cox moved from singing in local clubs and working as a backing vocalist into an international R&B career in the 1990s. Her self-titled 1995 debut established her in the U.S. market, but 1998's One Wish became the defining breakthrough. The album's ballad “Nobody's Supposed to Be Here” spent 14 consecutive weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, then a record for the longest-running chart-topper in the category.
Cox followed that success with records including The Morning After and Destination Moon while also developing a major presence in dance music. Her powerful, technically controlled voice let her move between R&B ballads, club records and musical theatre without being confined to one audience. She later took prominent stage roles, including the title role in Aida and the Whitney Houston-associated part of Rachel Marron in The Bodyguard musical, extending a career that already crossed recording, television and film.
Her Canadian significance is especially clear in the institutional recognition that followed. Cox has won multiple JUNO Awards, and in 2022 she became the first Black woman inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. Her career helped establish an international route for Canadian R&B singers years before Toronto became a globally recognized centre for the genre.
